WRITING TIP: Apprentice with writing you admire

writing tipsWhen you have a desire to access a new kind of language in your writing — and with it, a new corner of your psyche — find a piece of writing you admire and apprentice to that writer like this:

Read the piece slowly, whether it is a poem, an essay, or a piece of fiction, taking it in deeply, then select a prompt from it. It could be the beginning of a sentence, or a couple of words from an image that struck you. Set the timer, and freewrite inside of that writer’s field, allowing the content, cadence and language of their piece to inspire your own writing.
