    Coffee Shop Monday Morning

Babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers eating doughnuts and talking, talking, talking, but without expectation, it seems, of any response by their caretakers. In the space between the words of the chubby brown-haired pre-schooler pieces of half-eaten doughnut sticks out of the empty spaces in his mouth. Lost baby teeth and permanent ones that haven’t yet appeared leave plenty of room for the mushed up pastry.

In the ten minutes he’s been here the constant motion of a pale, red haired boy – about three or so – distracts from his chatter. Neither his mom (clearly the mother, because she grabs his arm when he moves rapidly to get away) nor the woman with her (a sister, a friend, the co-mother?) turns their attention to the red haired child until he turns up the volume of his chatter. Why oh why do people seem to think (at least as indicated by their behavior) that they can ignore a child EXCEPT when that child “misbehaves?” Do they fail to appreciate, when they become pregnant, that their life does not belong only to them when they’re raising a kid?
