WRITING TIP: Dive deep with a little prompting

writing tipWhen a writing prompt opens a door into a topic area that has a lot of charge for you, you can use that same prompt to dive deeper. Here’s how: Write from it again and again on different days. Set those freewrites aside without rereading until you have a pile of them. When you have a little time, read through them all at once, slowly and with much receptivity, intuitively underlining sentences, fragments or sections that particularly strike you. Type these selections into one file and play with moving them around, intuitively putting them in some kind of order, and see what they suggest. You might see a poem or series of poems, the main chunks of an essay, sections of a book, or best of all, a deeper sense of what makes you tick.
