WRITING TIP: Finding wisdom in shame

writing tipShame might be the human emotion we most avoid, and yet it contains insights into our deepest human values. Try writing about an event in your life that you are ashamed of from the perspective of an enlightened version of yourself. Write in slow motion your description of the event and the feelings it instigated, as though you were examining it with a magnifying glass—finding the truth about your values and separating it from the toxic guilt born out of the frailty of human ignorance. The resulting piece can be kept private, or used as the source for a courageous public piece of radical honesty and self-forgiveness.
