WRITING TIP: Turn out the lights

writing tipBesides turning out the lights before bed, how often do you spend time in the dark, whether in the utter blackness of night, a garden lit by the moon, or a room whose edges disappear outside the glow of a single candle flame? Edgeless, feral and mystic possibilities live in the darkness — a consciousness dimmed by the overwhelming bias that modern culture has toward electric light that keeps us productive and defined by hard edges. This is an invitation to enter the dark and converse with another kind of sensing, then spend some time writing in the glow of a single candle.
