WRITING TIP: Out of the shallows

freewritingAll of us have areas of life that we want to skim over or ignore: To go inside and truly pay attention to them bores us, frightens us, or repels us. If we nurture a habit of avoidance, we end up with a life lived in shallow waters that is unsatisfying to the soul, and shallow living produces shallow writing. It takes courage to dive in when we’d rather float, to be honest when we’d rather placate, to go toward what we fear and see if it’s really worth fearing. Writing that matters to us and to others is born from such courage.
