WRITING TIP: What makes a “real” writer?

freewritingThe first question asked of anyone who says they are a writer is usually “Where have you published?” In the old way of thinking, a “real” writer has a book contract with a big press or publication in a respected magazine, thus proving they were chosen by an editor somewhere — and being chosen is how we knew their work was worthwhile. But now thanks to new publishing technologies, we can get passed this game of ranking and publish as we like — whether books or blogs or Facebook posts. As Amanda Palmer put it, “Anything you write in any format can change somebody, can change an opinion, can scratch an opening in a scared up heart of a human being – and it doesn’t matter how you do it.”
