WRITING TIP: Return to the now

freewritingSometimes when we are doing a freewriting practice, we can get into a habit of rumination, recording only the thought layer that preoccupies our conscious mind. While this can be very helpful for self-reflection, when it turns into a rut, it can be a big relief to bring in some fresh air. An easy way to do this is to enter the present moment by changing your prompt to “Right now…” and tuning into the sensations of what is happening in this moment — not just in your mind, but in your body sensations, the movements of your heart, the place on the earth where you find yourself sitting, and the wider world that you can now sense is happening right along side you and your thoughts.
