WRITING TIP: Soulful writing is deep listening

freewritingWe think of writing and listening as two different things, but to enter into real relationship with ourselves and our world requires the receptive attitude best described as deep listening. Powerful writing comes from 95% listening, 5% recording accurately what we are taking in. Otherwise, we are in danger of recording only our assumptions, our judgments, our unexamined social conditioning. If we are full of all that, there is no space for something new to surprise us. Beginning a writing session by meditating on the sounds you hear is a good practice to cultivate this open, receptive attitude.
