WRITING TIP: Writing as relationship

freewritingIn order for writing to come from a place beyond intellect, memory and concept, we need to come into real contact with something other than ourselves. Cultivating receptivity allows us to enter the world of the “other” — be it chickadee, human or valley oak — and have our view expanded and clarified, rather than write about the other from a narrow distance through half-remembered images. This is writing as relationship. We open to the world and do as Rilke advised: “Learn about the pine from the pine; learn about the bamboo from the bamboo.”
