WRITING TIP: Broaden the conversation

freewritingWriters can easily fall into the trap of over-valuing human culture and experience, whether personal or collective. In much of what gets written and published, we talk only about our human selves to our human selves. Break out of this claustrophobic world by opening the conversation wider and deeper — into the natural world. The implications are much greater than they might seem. Philosopher Thomas Berry says that by not talking to the rivers, by not listening to the wind and stars, “We have broken the great conversation. By breaking that conversation we have shattered the universe. All the disasters that are happening now are a consequence of that spiritual ‘autism.’”
