WRITING TIP: Embrace focus and solitude.
Want to access something beneath the surface noise? Don’t allow enticing distractions to dominate your life. To create we need uninterupted time — focussed and solitary. Take it from poet Mary Oliver, who says that our creative work “needs the whole sky to fly in, and no eye watching until it comes to that certainty which it aspires to, but does not necessarily have at once. Privacy, then. A place apart — to pace, to chew pencils, to scribble and erase and scribble again.” Would you be willing to commit to a space without beeping phones or cute cat pictures? A solitary space devoted to cultivating something rare and precious: an opening to the creative truths you were meant to birth into language. Even 10 or 20 minutes of freewriting a day will create a portal for life to come through.
